Built between 1532 and 1536 on the site of an old 12th century castle, this more modern Italian style Chateau overlooks the wide valley where the Cher and Loire rivers run parallel. Jean le Breton was the finance minister to Francois I and quite an architect as well. He also built Chambord. Villandry became known as Henry IV style of true French Architecture. It had a peaceful history due to the integrity of its owner. It was built in true beauty using its windows to enjoy the outdoors and nearby village. While later owners changed some of its natural charm, Joachime Carvello restored it to its original design at the turn of the 20th century.
Villandry's Gardens are a work of art.
There are three tiered gardens; the top garden consists of a large mirror like pond that supplies water for the moat, fountains, and lower gardens. The second tier flower gardens are enclosed by boxwood borders. The first tier ornamental garden has been restored from 16th century plans of the French monastic tradition. It is a harmony of vegetables, fruit and flowers. There is a small herb garden near the village edged wall. There are 8 foot walkways all through the garden and one can get close to the beauty of these restored gardens. The chateau contains many beautiful works of art, the gardens reflect the goodness and glory
